SCRATCH®
is a data workflow solution and as such employs file based I/O for
content import and export. However, since some DI workflows can benefit
from direct video based I/O, a number of Industry partners have joined
forces with APL to deliver this functionality to SCRATCH
users around the world. The open nature of the SCRATCH
architecture allows a ‘mix and match’ approach to select the I/O configuration
that suits your DI workflow best.
Additional
solutions are currently under review and will be posted on APL as
soon as satisfactory interoperability has been confirmed.
Please consult
the manufacturers’ web pages for product specific information. The
hard and software combinations for video I/O listed on APL are capable
of generating valid DPX files compatible with SCRATCH. ASSIMILATE™
Inc. is currently working with manufacturers to harmonize metadata
exchange and streamline the capture process. APL will keep you informed
as we progress.

Two types of setup
are common:
1) The
capture hardware may be installed on the SCRATCH
host workstations. In this instance the DPX frames created will
be written directly to the same storage as used by SCRATCH.
2)
A dedicated separate capture PC can be used. The DPX frames can
be exchanged via shared storage on a SAN installation or conventional
network connections.
Please note
that most tape based recording formats in the HD domain will employ
some degree of compression and reduction of color bandwidth. Some
VTRs will also use internal bit depth reduction measures, degrading
color specific information in the image even further. As such they
cannot be considered a transparent archive medium and will introduce
generation loss into the DI pipeline.
Before making
your decision you may find this background information on HD
SDI and HSDL useful.
