Useful tip – Enable TCQ/NCQ if volume is heavily fragmented
While Tagged Command Queuing for SCSI drives and Native Command
Queuing for SATA drives can add a small overhead and marginally slow
down sequential reads, they will improve the performance of an array
when fragmented read or write requests are likely. TCQ/NCQ in combination
with regular defragmentation should ensure sustained performance of
an array, even if the array is subjected to unusually high content
churn. Useful
tip - Turn off virus scanner
You should avoid running virus scanning software on your SCRATCH®
workstation since this could lead to every frame being scanned for
virus infection prior to playback. This will significantly decrease
your playback performance. Depending on the product used, unfortunately
just excluding the relevant file extensions used by your frames
may not always remedy this problem. If in doubt conduct your own
tests to establish a suitable compromise between virus protection
and performance degredation.
Useful tip
- Turn off remote desktop software
Remote desktop application and terminal servers like VNC can negatively
impact on the playback frame rate. Please disable these applications/services
for optimum performance.
Useful tip
- Don't fill up storage completely
Most filesystems, including NTFS, will degrade in performance under
near full conditions. It is advisable to avoid this by using disk
quotas to prevent the storage from being completely filled. SCRATCH
should not be run on storage with less than 5% of free disk space
remaining. For workflows that generate a highly fragmented file
system (frequent deletes and additions of frames) the free space
should be increased to at least 10% to allow the disk defragmentation
tool to function effectively.
Useful tip
- Run the correct graphics driver
Please always ensure to run the approved graphics driver for SCRATCH
with your graphics hardware. Further details can be found on the
SCRATCH
Support site.
