SCRATCH® and SCRATCH Lab® are 64-bit optimized for high performance tasks such as, real-time playback, conform or grading of high-resolution material. In order to fully enjoy the power at your disposal we recommend minimum levels of hardware. The key components to run SCRATCH at its best are Graphics, RAM and disk bandwidth.

 

System Requirements for SCRATCH Lab

Graphics
SCRATCH Lab is fully accelerated by GPU technology. While a specific GPU is not required to operate SCRATCH Lab, maximum performance will be achieved with the addition of a GPU. Any GPU card that supports OpenGL will work. The following GPU cards are supported by SCRATCH Lab:
  • Nvidia GTX 680 and Titan
  • NVIDIA Quadro 4000 on Mac OS X
  • NVIDIA Quadro 6000 on Windows
  • AMD Radeon HD 5770, 5870 and 7950 cards on Mac OS® X (requires Lion or better)
  • AMD FirePro W8000, W9000 and V7900 on Windows
Always check on the ASSIMILATE Support Website for which driver to install for your card as not all drivers are tested.
 
SDI Output
SCRATCH Lab supports SDI output (with embedded audio) via:
  • NVIDIA Quadro 6000SDI on Windows
  • AJA Kona 3 and 3G on Mac OS X and Windows
  • Bluefish444 Epoch | 2K Ultra on Mac Os X and Windows
  • Bluefish444 Epoch | 4K Supernova on Windows
 
RAM
A minimum of 4GB of RAM is required to operate SCRATCH Lab. For maximum performance, we suggest 12GB or more.
 
Storage
Playback performance can be limited by disk speed. For maximum performance, we recommend an internal or external RAID for media storage.
 
Other Considerations
 
RED r3d Decoding
One or two RED Rocket cards will give real time debayering of RED and RED Epic material. 
 
OS
Operating System. SCRATCH Lab requires Windows 7 64 bit or later, or Mac OS X 10.7.5 or 10.8.2.

RAM
You need a minimum of 12GB of RAM.
 
Storage
Whether Direct Attached or SAN storage, bandwidth is a key factor in getting real-time playback performance. For example, if you wish to maintain 2K stereo real-time playback you will need to sustain 1000MB/sec. We recommend a 10 bay internal or external RAID storage for media files.
 
Other Considerations
 
RED r3d Decoding
SCRATCH can perform RED r3d decoding at various resolutions and de-bayer qualities to match the real-time performance of your computer hardware. If one, or two, RED Rocket cards are installed, full resolution and premium de-bayer quality can be achieved (in stereo with two cards). 
 
Grading Panel
SCRATCH can be driven from the Avid Artist Color panel series or all Tangent panels including the Element, CP200 and Wave panels.
 

SCRATCH on Windows 7

OS
SCRATCH is optimized for Windows 7, 64-bit operating system.
 
Processor
Single Xeon i5 or i7 is minimum spec. Recommend dual.
 
PCI-E
To add additional cards for SDI, Audio and RED Rocket Cards aim for as many x16 sized PCI-E slots as you can.
 
Monitoring
NVIDIA Quadro cards offer dual DVI outputs, and SCRATCH allows you to configure the second as a full-screen output that will not have the user interface overlaid on it and can be used as a clean feed for projection, client monitoring or output to a tape deck.
 
SDI
For SDI monitoring and SDI playout you have four options:
  • The Quadro SDI output daughter card for the NVIDIA Quadro 6000
  • The AMD V7900 with an AJA Kona 3 or 3G card
  • Bluefish444 Epoch | 2K Ultra card
  • Bluefish444 Epoch | 4K Supernova card
 
Audio
Stereo monitoring is available via the on-board audio (speaker) output. For “advanced” monitoring, including multi-channel audio, and playout to tape a professional audio card like the Lynx AES16e or a combination SDI/Audio card such as the BlueFish444 can be used. If you have purchased the NVIDIA SDI daughter card, there is no need for an additional audio card, as the SDI option also gives you embedded audio.
 

SCRATCH on Mac OS X

Mac Pro
A powerful Mac Pro will be required if you have video clips in a raw digital camera format, or for working with projects in HD, 2K and 4K. On the Mac you have fewer configuration options.
 
OS
Max OSX 10.7.5 or 10.8.2.
 
Processor
Minimum Processor requirements: MacPro5,1 - Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” processors.
 
Monitoring

Dual Monitor: Resolutions of up to HD resolution
The Mac requirements for a dual monitor are a passive converter Display Port to DVI converter then DVI to DVI which only supports HD resolution.
 
Dual Monitor: Resolutions of up to 2560x1600
An active Dual Link DisplayPort to DVI adapter is needed to get full 2560px. Since the Nvidia fermi series only has one DVI port and 2 display ports.
 
SDI Output
SCRATCH supports SDI output (with embedded audio) on Mac OS X via:
  • The AJA Kona 3 and 3G cards
  • The Bluefish444 Epoch | 2K Ultra card
 
Drivers
The current graphics drivers you need are the Cuda driver 3.2.17 for Mac OS X and the NVIDIA retail 256.01 driver (you need them both).
 
RED Rocket
If you plan on using a RED Rocket card you will need a PCIe x16 slot.
