SCRATCH Play

The industry's first FREE pro media player

If you deal with creative media, you play files with a wide variety of freeware, shareware, and paid programs that usually work and can handle “that file.” Some of them only work on PC, some only on Mac. It’s a mess.

SCRATCH Play is now the answer.

  • NEW! SCRATCH Play support for Oculus Rift VR content

Whether you’re on set, in visual effects, or a semi-pro/hobbyist, SCRATCH Play is your ultimate media companion. Why?

From Epic and ALEXA to your smartphone.

SCRATCH Play can open any single video or an entire folder of mixed media and play it on a single “CONstruct.” (That’s a timeline in our lingo.)

Want to instantly pull a still or a clip from the RAW footage of a shot on-set and quickly review it- without interrupting the DIT station. Or rapidly scrub through an entire CONstruct of thousands of clips. Just press Play.

Want to review a card full of mixed stills and video from your camera… or scenes and takes from an SSD? How about reviewing the VFX render you just finished - at your desk in realtime and without loading it on a server? SCRATCH Play is the perfect assistant.

SCRATCH Play supports a wide range of media formats. From cinematic RAW files (RED, Arri, Sony, Canon, Phantom, etc) to DSLR RAW files (Canon 5D, Nikon N600, etc) to Editorial formats (MXF, WAV, etc) to pro VFX/still formats (DPX, EXR, etc). Even web-based media (QuickTime, Windows Media, MP4, H.264, etc) and still image formats (TIFF, JPG, PNG, etc).

Free. Because it should be.

All devices are bundled with media players that support consumer media. Other players support more types of media, but cost hundreds of dollars. Yet players are a default. You shoot or download media, and you play it. Nobody wants to pay for that.

We agree. And because of that, SCRATCH Play is free.

Color my World

SCRATCH Play features powerful color-correction tools that let you set looks on-set, and generate LUTs, CDLs or JPEG snapshots. This is the same color technology found in SCRATCH - ASSIMLATE’s world-class professional color-grading application, used on thousands of projects that have won awards at everything from Sundance, to Cannes, to the Academy.

Data behind the data

SCRATCH Play is not just any media player. Sure, it plays virtually anything, but it also supports features only found in professional applications including camera metadata display, clip framing, rotating and resizing.

See all your media, and explore your creativity

While SCRATCH Play is primarily a player, we’ve also borrowed from ASSIMILATE’s high-end SCRATCH toolset and transplanted the industry’s most powerful timeline: the “CONstruct.”

The CONstruct is a visual map to your media that starts with a basic timeline, but also allows you to create and manage unlimited versions of your clips and images. Clips on a timeline can be of different formats or color spaces and can be easily framed within a single resolution. Easily switch between versions or use the dual view or wipe function to do side by side comparisons. You can even manage multiple CONstructs in Play - each with unlimited number of versions of each clip.

Load up a clip or an image and explore - easily create 5 or 6 different, non-destructive versions and easily switch (or even wipe) back and forth between them.

So, go ahead…download SCRATCH Play now, load up your media, and Just Press Play!

Cinematic VR - the new frontier

This new version of SCRATCH Play adds support for native
playback of cinematic content created for Oculus Rift – 360
virtual reality (VR) viewing.

SCRATCH Play now supports Cylindrical, Equirectangular,
and Cube formats for output to a secondary monitor, or
an Oculus Rift DKI or DKII. With a Rift connected, these
formats are mapped in real-time to Rift output, with full
head-tracking support. SCRATCH Play will output in
360 mode with just a normal secondary display/monitor
acting as a window into the virtual world, with real-time
ability to pan, track, and tilt around the sphere. This
means that developers creating cinematic content for
the Rift, now have a powerful playback tool that
allows them to instantly review VR shots in real-time
whether or not they have a Rift headset.

Cameras, cameras
and more cameras

Why is SCRATCH Play so popular? Because it supports more camera and media formats than any other player- and for free! V8.2 extends that lead with support for several new cameras and formats, including:

> Black Magic Pocket Camera
> Magic Lantern support for Canon DSLRs
> Panasonic RAW (vrw)
> and a great performance boost for XAVC 4K

SCRATCH Play FAQ's

Q. Can I run SCRATCH or SCRATCH Lab on the same computer I use to run SCRATCH Play?

A. SCRATCH and SCRATCH Lab are a superset of SCRATCH Play, so they already contain all the functionality that SCRATCH Play has. You cannot run SCRATCH Play and the current version 7.0 of SCRATCH – SCRATCH Lab on the same system. You would need to uninstall, install and activate each application separately.

Q. My clips play back including audio, but they play either too fast or too slow.

A. The CONstruct represents a timeline. All clips in a timeline must have the same frame rate. If a clip on a timeline was recorded at a higher framerate than that of the timeline it will appear to play too slow. The same applies to audio. You can adjust the framerate of a timeline using the controls on the far left of the menu in the CONstruct or the controls in the Settings menu of the Player.

To adjust the framerate of a clip you would need a re-timer such as Twixtor from re:Vision Effects. This more advanced retiming functionality is included in SCRATCH Lab and the full version of SCRATCH.

Q. My video is playing fine, but I get no audio. What could be wrong?

A. First the obvious – does the clip even contain audio? Is the speaker icon on the main toolbar in the Player on? Are your speakers and the volume of you speakers on? If all true then let's have a look at the mixer in SCRATCH Play. You open the mixer by “swiping” your cursor to the top of the screen to expose the top menu bar in the Player module, then clicking the corresponding button. Once you open the mixer please check the volume settings or check if the correct audio device has been set in the “settings” menu of the Mixer.

Q. I had UI elements on the screen, but now they’re gone.

A. Some control elements in SCRATCH Play switch on and off via a “swiping” gesture with your mouse. In the CONstruct swiping to the left side of the screen will show / hide the project tree. In the Player swiping to the right of the screen will show/hide the version / metadata stack. Swiping to the top of the screen will show/hide the top toolbar with access to the Statistics and Mixer panel, the magnifier and snapshot functionality. Swiping to the bottom of the screen will show/hide the Player menu panel and Player controls – switching to full screen.

Q. I double-clicked a file, SCRATCH launches but I get an error message and nothing happens.

A. The first time you start SCRATCH you need to activate it. Please start SCRATCH the first time by double-clicking the SCRATCH application or shortcut – rather than opening it by double-clicking a media file.

Q. I launched SCRATCH Play, and it is asking me for a license key, but I don't have a license key. What do I do?

A. The first time you launch SCRATCH Play, it requires you to activate it – meaning that it will register your version with our on-line server. To activate the free version, simply enter your email address into the appropriate field of the license dialog.

Q. I bought a PLAY Premium license but how do I activate my license key?

A. When you bought SCRATCH Play Premium (or another licensed version of SCRATCH) on the on/line store you should have received an email with the license key. If you did not receive an email, please first check if it did not end up in your spam folder. Otherwise please contact store@assimilateinc.com

If you have a license key, please select the Preferences button in the CONstruct menu. This will open the Preferences dialog. There you will find the Update License button that will open the license activation dialog. Simply enter your key here.

System Requirements for SCRATCH Play

SCRATCH Play requires Windows 7 64 bit or later, or Mac OS X 10.7.5 or higher.

A minimum of 4GB of RAM is required to operate SCRATCH Play. For maximum performance, we suggest an NVIDIA or AMD GPU.

People that do everything need tools that do everything.

Today’s media professionals are required to wear more hats than ever before. The age of specialization has given way to a flexible workforce of freelancers and “dot-it-all filmmakers who are required to master many disciplines. So many of today’s directors are also producers or cinematographers. Today’s actors are also writers or directors. The same is true in post-production, where editors are now also colorists, and visual effects artists. And this landscape changes constantly.

Anytime, anywhere.

Such constant change requires incredibly powerful, yet flexible tools that can take whatever you throw at them - wherever and whenever you need them. Enter SCRATCH Play + Microsoft's Surface Pro tablet. The perfect marriage of flexibility and power: the power of a full Windows 8 PC that goes virtually anywhere, with the flexibility of the world’s first free professional media player that supports all popular media formats. SCRATCH Play + Surface Pro is the perfect companion for media professionals both on-set and in post because:

  • You get the full power and graphics of a laptop computer in a tablet-sized device. So you can play or scrub virtually anything, from DSLR footage to RAW formats such as those from RED, ARRI, Sony, and Canon. It also means that you can run other applications that you need, such as Avid Media Composer, Final Draft, or even Microsoft Office, wherever you are.
  • You get the expandability that other tablets lack. Both USB-3 and WiFi offer flexible, high-speed expandability that allows you to easily plug in a card reader or mass storage device. So, your media is instantly available to play back - on-set or in post.
  • You get an HD screen with full calibration. Reviewing professionally shot footage on an ultra-portable device is far more powerful when knowing what your images really look like.

“We use SCRATCH Play to pull stills directly from the RED RAW files, and to be able to move through footage fast without having to stand at the DIT station. To have the Surface Pro to pull up a still, or moving footage, to match to the shot we’re doing currently is huge.

The Surface Pro is great because it's a full PC, but it’s portable. I have SCRATCH running on it, I have Media Composer running on it - those are all things I can’t do on an iPad.”

Diamond Brothers

"Having SCRATCH Play on my Surface Pro allows me to review footage on my own time and make notes right on the clips, to make sure we got all the shots, and that everything looks exactly the way I want it to look. Then, when I’m working with my SCRATCH colorist, I can review everything with him right there and know that we’re speaking the same language.”

Amanda Lippert: Filmmaker/producer/writer/actor/SCRATCH Play user

"I love SCRATCH Play on my Surface Pro, because I need to see what I’m shooting immediately. I can use the USB-3 port to just plug in a card reader, double-click on a clip, play it back and adjust the color to set looks in real time- no matter which format I’m shooting. So the DP and I can review the footage onset right after shooting it."

Cinematic VR - the new frontier

This new version of SCRATCH Play adds support for native
playback of cinematic content created for Oculus Rift – 360
virtual reality (VR) viewing.

SCRATCH Play now supports Cylindrical, Equirectangular,
and Cube formats for output to a secondary monitor, or
an Oculus Rift DKI or DKII. With a Rift connected, these
formats are mapped in real-time to Rift output, with full
head-tracking support. SCRATCH Play will output in
360 mode with just a normal secondary display/monitor
acting as a window into the virtual world, with real-tim
ability to pan, track, and tilt around the sphere. This
means that developers creating cinematic content for
the Rift, now have a powerful playback tool that
allows them to instantly review VR shots in real-time
whether or not they have a Rift headset.

Cameras, cameras
and more cameras

Why is SCRATCH Play so popular? Because it supports more camera and media formats than any other player- and for free! V8.2 extends that lead with support for several new cameras and formats, including:

> Black Magic Pocket Camera
> Magic Lantern support for Canon DSLRs
> Panasonic RAW (vrw)
> and a great performance boost for XAVC 4K
