SCRATCH proves a winner in a range of RED ONE, 2K DPX and HD workflows for Cannes 2011 films

Santa Clara, CA, May 26, 2011 – Several films created by filmmakers whose post-production companies harnessed ASSIMILATE’s SCRATCH® DI tools in their digital post production workflows, won prestigious awards at the Cannes Film Festival 2011, the world’s premiere showcase for independent and international filmmakers.

ASSIMILATE congratulates Alta Definición (Buenos Aires, Argentina), DuboiColor (Paris, France) and Stuck On On (Austin, Texas, USA), for their high-quality post production using the powerhouse capabilities of SCRATCH in a range of RED ONE, 2K DPX and HD workflows on award-winning films.

Cannes Film Festival Camera D'Or:
Las Acacias (2011), directed by Pablo Giorgelli, shot using RED ONE cameras. A delicate and touching road movie about Rubén, a lonely, middle-aged truck driver who first picks up a load of lumber bound for Buenos Aires, and then Jacinta, a country woman who's headed for the city in search of employment, along with her five-month-old daughter. As the miles slip by, they slowly dip into each other's souls. Post Production: Alta Definición Argentina www.hdargentina.com

Gonzalo Rodríguez Bubis, president, Alta Definición Argentina: “We keep moving forward on solid ground with our SCRATCH DI work. Our SCRATCH is used for processing films across Latin America ¬¬– from Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Uruguay – and we are thrilled that Las Acacias has won in Cannes. What more could we want?”

Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize:
Polisse (2011), directed by Maiwenn Le Besco, shot using Sony EX3 cameras. The daily grind for the cops of the Police Department's Juvenile Protection Unit - taking in child molesters, busting underage pick-pockets, interrogating abusive parents - and how they balance their private lives with the reality they confront at work. Post Production: DuboiColor (France) www.quintaindustries.com

Critic's Week Grand Prize:
Take Shelter (2011), directed by Jeff Nichols, shot on Super 35mm film, scanned to 2K DPX. A working-class husband and father questions whether his terrifying dreams of a storm signal something real to come, or the onset of an inherited mental illness he's feared his whole life. Post Production: Stuck On On (Austin, Texas) www.stuckonon.com

Allison Turrell, executive producer, Stuck On On: “Take Shelter was the first long-form Super 35mm project we graded using SCRATCH, and we would never have been able to take on a project like this without it. SCRATCH gives us the raw horsepower we need to work on large features, and delivers a full-quality grading and finishing service that makes movies stand out, whether they are originated on film or digital cameras like RED.”

Best Actor - Jean Dujardin for The Artist:
The Artist (2011), directed by Michel Hazanavicius, shot on 35mm film, and scanned to 2K DPX. It's Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of The Talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. But for young extra Peppy Miller, it seems the sky's the limit, and movie stardom awaits. Post Production: DuboiColor (France) www.quintaindustries.com

Eric Martin, director of post production, DuboiColor Paris: "Every film that goes through our DI workflow, about 60 per year, is conformed in SCRATCH, because it's reliable, fast, and it just works – especially with tight deadlines like Cannes Film Festival. Whether it's conforming Sony EX3 material for Polisse, or 2K DPX on a film like The Artist, SCRATCH is the best solution today for us. Furthermore, SCRATCH allows us to easily create and combine LUTs, which are then sent to the VFX facilities to streamline the workflow.”
